2015 Legal Summit of the Americas

The Lawyer and Democracy

December 3-4, 2015

42 West 44th Street, New York, NY

Over 75 leading lawyers, members of academia and NGO leaders from Latin America and the United States joined forces at the 2015 Legal Summit of the Americas and explored how the legal profession can sustain democratic governance and open society in Latin America.

The Summit is organized by the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, in collaboration with the Pro Bono Network of the Americas. Summit sponsors include the Tinker Foundation and Ultramar Travel.

The 2015 Legal Summit of the Americas builds on the success of the 2005 Strategy Summit for the Americas, convened by the Vance Center to launch the pro bono initiative that became the Pro Bono Declaration of the Americas and later led to the establishment of the Pro Bono Network of the Americas by the Vance Center and Fundación Pro Bono Chile. Today, more than 500 legal organizations throughout the hemisphere have subscribed to the Declaration, and the Pro Bono Network of the Americas already counts with member organizations in 13 countries.

Participants to the 2015 Legal Summit of the Americas collaborated and identified specific objectives in furtherance of the fundamental obligation of members of the legal profession to serve the public interest and their central role in maintaining the rule of law and open society. Through the exchange of ideas regarding, among others, pragmatic ethical engagement, supporting civil society and countering corruption, the Summit will lead to new initiatives that would allow meeting our objectives through ongoing collaboration.
