  • A former Chief of the New York City Law Department Environmental Law Division
  • A U.S. District Court Judge
  • The General Counsel of an international private equity firm
  • A former Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and the Legal Counsel of the United Nations

These are some of the many individuals who are members of the Vance Center's staff, committee and international council. They all share a special interest in advancing global justice and strengthening pro bono practice, ethics and diversity in the legal profession.

The Vance Center is a unique collaboration of international lawyers catalyzing public interest innovation. Founded and led by senior attorneys in private practice, housed within the New York City Bar Association's nonprofit affiliate and cooperating with its many expert committees, the Vance Center is a hub in a worldwide network of law firm practitioners, civil society leaders, and public officials throughout the world.

Vance Center participants embody and strive to strengthen the vital role of lawyers in securing democratic institutions and individual rights. We see the rule of law as an active pursuit, both a goal and a practice. Lawyers are key to its definition and its success and thus bear a particular responsibility for its maintenance and its grounding in social justice. This responsibility arises within the lawyer's individual ethics, as well as the collective global profession, of which the Vance Center is an expression.
