Vance Center Welcomes New Public Interest Reporting Staff Attorney
Josephine Herman joined the Vance Center in August 2025 as a Staff Attorney with the Public Interest Reporting Program.
Josephine Herman joined the Vance Center in August 2025 as Staff Attorney for the Public Interest Reporting Program. She works with international journalism clients as well as U.S.-based clients of the Lawyers for Reporters program.
Josephine brings more than ten years of combined experience in immigration law and the nonprofit sector. Prior to joining the Vance Center, she worked at the New Jersey Consortium for Immigrant Children, beginning as founding attorney before moving to a managing attorney role, and leading the establishment of a new direct legal representation program for young immigrants.
Josephine began her legal career as an Equal Justice Works Fellow at Catholic Charities Community Services, representing Indigenous Central American clients through an innovative medical-legal partnership. To date, she has represented more than 100 clients in deportation defense and immigration matters.
She received her JD cum laude from Harvard Law School, where she was a member of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau. Before law school, Josephine worked in both Chicago and Guatemala, supporting gender-based violence prevention and response programs. She also holds a BA cum laude in American Studies from Tufts University.
Josephine is admitted to practice law in New York and New Jersey and is fluent in Spanish.
