On June 4, 2025, the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice of the New York City Bar Association, along with counsel Milbank LLP, filed an amicus curiae brief to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for the case Ramos Durand y otros v. Vance Center Submits Amicus Brief on Inter-American Court’s Jurisdiction to Hear Cases of Human Rights Violations in Venezuela

May 23, 2024 – The Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice of the New York City Bar Association, along with counsel Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, today filed an amicus curiae brief to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for the case Chirinos et al. v. Venezuela.   The submission relates to the jurisdiction of the Court to hear cases concerning human rights violations in Venezuela that occurred after Venezuela’s withdrawal from the American Convention on Human Rights in 2013. Vance Center Supports Crucial Submission in Landmark Inter-American Court Decision on Environmental Rights

Photo credit: Shutterstock  On March 22, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights issued a landmark decision finding that the state of Peru violated multiple human rights of the residents of the town of La Oroya, including their right to a healthy environment. Vance Center Files Brief in Landmark Climate Case at Inter-American Court

The Court is considering a request for an advisory opinion outlining the obligations that States owe in relation to the climate emergency under the American Convention on Human Rights.
